About National Institute of Virology

National Institute of Virology Campus in Pune

The National Institute of Virology (NIV) is a leading virology research institute located in Pune, Maharashtra, India. Established in 1952 as the Virus Research Centre, it was redesignated as NIV in 1978. The institute operates under the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India.

NIV serves as a national reference centre for viral diseases and plays a pivotal role in outbreak investigations, surveillance, and research on emerging and re-emerging viruses. Our mission is to conduct high-quality research, develop diagnostics and vaccines, and provide expertise to combat viral threats to public health.

With state-of-the-art laboratories and a team of over 200 scientists and staff, NIV has contributed significantly to understanding viruses such as influenza, dengue, chikungunya, Nipah, and SARS-CoV-2. The institute also offers training programs and collaborates with international health organizations.

Our Research Focus Areas

Viral Epidemiology

Comprehensive surveillance and study of viral disease patterns, transmission dynamics, and risk factors across India. We monitor outbreaks and provide real-time data to public health authorities.

Our teams conduct field studies in collaboration with state health departments, collecting samples and analyzing trends to predict and prevent epidemics.

Diagnostic Development

Design and validation of rapid, accurate diagnostic tests for viral infections. NIV has developed numerous ELISA, PCR, and point-of-care tests used nationwide.

We maintain a repository of viral strains and reagents, supporting diagnostic laboratories across the country with quality control and proficiency testing.

Vaccine Research

Preclinical and clinical research on vaccine candidates for diseases like dengue, influenza, and COVID-19. Our work includes immunogenicity studies and trial coordination.

Collaborations with biotechnology firms and academic institutions accelerate vaccine development and evaluation.

Molecular Virology

Advanced genomic sequencing and characterization of viruses to understand mutations, pathogenicity, and evolution. NIV uses next-generation sequencing platforms.

Research on virus-host interactions and antiviral drug discovery is a key focus, aiming to develop novel therapeutic strategies.

Diagnostic Services & Facilities

NIV provides specialized diagnostic services for viral diseases to hospitals, research institutions, and public health programs. Our facilities are accredited and follow stringent quality protocols.

Reference Testing

As a national reference laboratory, we confirm difficult cases and new viral infections. Services include serology, molecular testing, and virus isolation.

Turnaround time is optimized for urgent outbreak samples, with 24/7 emergency support.

Training Programs

We offer hands-on training in virological techniques for medical professionals, laboratory technicians, and students. Courses range from basic virology to advanced molecular methods.

Annual workshops and online modules are conducted in collaboration with ICMR and WHO.

Consultancy

Expert consultancy on outbreak management, laboratory setup, and biosafety. Our scientists advise government agencies and international bodies on viral threats.

We provide technical guidance for policy-making and public health interventions.
